Sub-optimal Beer

Sub-optimal Beer

Despite massive gains made recently by the Craft Beer industry, beer made by Bud, Miller, Coors and other giants make up the vast majority of beer consumed in the world. Why do so many people drink this stuff? We taste it so you don't have to. (Listed as adults only for the occasional f-bomb, but otherwise safe.)

Show notes

For the second installment of the Sub-Optimal Beer podcast, Thomas, James, Garrett, Rusty Seth, and myself gathered at the Highlander for the battle of the heavyweights. MORE LIKE LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHTS, AM I RIGHT? Sigh. There aren't really any surprises in here regarding either of these two beers, but it is 25 worthwhile minutes of spirited, entertaining banter at the expense of a two large multi-national conglomerates. Also, James coins what could be a new name for the podcast around the 23:42 mark.

Review: iPhone voice recorder applications for podcasters [UPDATED 5:24 p.m.]

So you bought a shiny new iPhone 3G or upgraded your iPhone to the 2.0 firmware (raises hand) and you're wondering which applications you should install first. For podcasters, a voice recorder is a logical choice.

Of course, like every other category of software in the iTunes Application Store, the number of options is simultaneously overwhelming and underwhelming (I don't need four separate flashlight apps that make my screen turn white, thanks much).

I've picked four choices of voice recorders that might be useful to a podcaster for conducting interviews, installed them, made some recordings with them, and taken down some impressions. Read more »

The "Midsummer" Cast Podcast (4 of 4) - Episode 18

Show notes

This is the fourth and final Cast Podcast for A Midsummer Night's Dream. Actors are so busy and it is difficult to keep them in one place long enough to share a few words. And so, in this Cast Podcast, we offer a little insight into the thoughts and motivations of two mighty Tinkers and a couple best described as Forces of Nature.

This cast podcast features ...
Steve
Larry, Jr
Sara
and Zip

Music for this podcast is a track called "It Was 1972" by Lasswell, an artist on CCMixter.org (available via Creative Commons). Given that we set our Midsummer in 1973, it just seemed appropriate.

Finally, on the eve of auditions for our next show, we're posting our last Cast Podcast for Midsummer. And even then, there were a handful of very talented actors who slipped through our grasp without recording their own contribution! But rest assured that we couldn't have done our original show without the talented efforts of Sherry, Julia and Scott. We'd also like to thank Patrick, Elizabeth and Wendy for stepping in for our re-staging of Midsummer in Lawrenceville.

Also ... auditions for our next production, Romeo and Juliet (our first tragedy!), are scheduled for tomorrow! For more information, please check out the R&J audition page.

The interview is broken into two parts, of which this is the first. Here we discuss the history behind Bobby's show, the Nintendo Wii, our shared esteem for Super Mario Bros. 2, and a few other topics.

In the second part, which is posted here, we mostly talk about the Atlanta game industry and the politics of gaming.

Interview - Atlanta filmmaker Bailey Barash

Listen (0:13:32)

Please update to the latest Flash Player and make sure Javascript is enabled in your browser. Or use the download link below to listen on your desktop.

Show notes

This interview was recorded at Charis Books and More, before a screening of Bailey Barash's new documentary, The AIDS Chronicles - Here to Represent. Bailey is an Atlanta native who spent 19 years at CNN before starting her own production company. The AIDS Chronicles is the result of almost five years of work documenting the impact of HIV/AIDS on the urban black community in Atlanta.

Bailey and I discussed media representation of AIDS, its impact on Atlanta in contrast to other areas of the country, some of the challenges of making a documentary about a sensitive subject matter, and more. (I feel I should apologize to all you listeners for saying "uh-huh" so much in this interview. I usually don't do that!)

The film, by the way, is amazing. It deserves all the accolades it's receiving and many more. Don't pass up the opportunity to see it!
