Podcast interview with Sherry Heyl, organizer of SoCon07

SoCon07 SoCon07 is coming up in less than two weeks! There's now a podcast available of an interview with organizer Sherry Heyl; be sure to give it a listen! In it, Sherry mentions (among other things) how business use of social media is going to be good for both businesses and consumers. Registration for SoCon07 is currently closed, but be on the lookout in the few days before the event - they might open it back up if some people cancel ahead of time.

ATLANTA, Ga., December 18, 2006 &mash; The Atlanta Media Bloggers Group announced today that it will host Atlanta's first, city-wide Social Media Conference on February 10, 2007. Named SoCon07, it will be the South's first official social media 'mashup.'

SoCon07 plans to bring together bloggers, new media pros, academics, and people from across the spectrum of marketing, public relations, human resources, and the executive ranks to discuss new media in the South - how it is evolving, who are the local pioneers, what techniques are working, what results have been achieved, and what new media promises for all of us.

Conference chair Sherry Heyl, CEO of the Internet consulting firm What a Concept! explains, "New media, including the use of blogs, wikis, social networks, video and podcasting, is very much in its infancy here in the South. SoCon07 expects to galvanize, and we hope inspire all of the people and organizations that are using or getting ready to use new media resources in their business and personal ventures. There is a lot of information to be shared, networking to be done, and topics and techniques to debate and discuss, both between the experts and within in the local business community. This conference, whose theme is 'Connect Because You Can,' will provide a venue for everyone with an interest or stake in new media to get together for the first time in Atlanta!"

The conference will be held at Kennesaw State University on Saturday, Feb 10, 2007 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Attendance is free of charge, although pre-registration is required. Selected SoCon07 speakers include:

  • Chris Claus, CEO, Kaneva, founder of Internet Security Services (ISS)
  • Jonas Luster, Social Text

Coming in February: Atlanta social media conference

Last weekend, I mentioned the as-yet-unnamed social media conference being organized by Sherry Heyl, the Atlanta Media Bloggers, and a bunch of us local new media riff-raff. The conference is still seeking a name, so as before, share your ideas; but I now have more information about the conference.

The Basics

  • What: A conference with the goal of showing how the various components of social media are interrelated and how they affect our lives. The bulk of trusted information is no longer coming from journalists and advertising, but from consumer-generated content and ongoing online conversations.
  • When: February 10, 2007
  • Where: Kennesaw State University
  • How much: Free!

Post about corporate podcasting at What a Concept!

The first of what I intend to be a series of blog posts about the business value of podcasting is now up at the What a Concept! blog. An excerpt:

Podcasting can bring more of a human voice to business. Hearing people's voices, especially when those people are not just reading from a script, makes your organization seems more real. It's a reminder that there are actual people behind the business. This serves to further the humanity of the business by allowing customers to feel less like "just a demographic."

Check it out... and stay tuned for more. Thanks to Sherry for giving me the opportunity to write these for her site.
