Blog policy

We've been meaning to put together a blogging section in the FAQ with a few ground rules and guidelines, but haven't quite gotten around to it yet. It was brought to our attention late last week that we need to get on this.

Someone found our site through a search engine, signed up for an account, and immediately posted a press release as a blog post last week.

That seems like spammy behavior, right? Well, not so fast. People have been allowed to post press releases as blog posts in the past, including releases for events with no affiliation to this site. The event in question was in Atlanta and it was technology-related, so it's not like it was totally off-topic. It wasn't an ad for Viagra or an online casino.

We occasionally have press releases for our own events that we will post here, and so we aren't going to ban press releases outright. On the other hand, we are not going to allow the blog to become a dumping ground for press releases for every event under the sun. Check out the Atlanta Daybook for that.

So we need to set up some prerequisites. My thought is that someone will need to have contributed to or participated in the site in a sincere way before being allowed to post a press release or other event announcement.

What is sincere probably sounds kind of arbitrary, so I'd really like to hear from you on this.

I don't think that signing up for an account, writing "nice podcast" in a comment, and then dumping a press release is going to count. I'm thinking you need to have contributed an episode to a podcast, host your own podcast here, be an affiliate, or be a frequent commenter. That, or the event should be related to Georgia and podcasting, which probably won't be the case too often.

Thoughts?

Sex 2.0 will explore sexuality, feminism and social media

ATLANTA -- What happens when technology, sex, knowledge, and power enable women to meet up, act up, and hook up like never before? These questions and more are the focus of the Sex 2.0 unconference in Atlanta, Georgia on April 12th, 2008. Held at 1763, a 10,000-square-foot, fully equipped dungeon located 10 miles north of downtown Atlanta, the unconference will feature conversations among activists, social networking pioneers, bloggers, swingers, cruisers, sex futurists and kinksters who have been sexing up Web 2.0 from the beginning -- whether in Bangalore or Bangor, Maine.

Maybe you've heard of Web sites like Facebook, Craigslist, or Flickr. They're all social networking sites, the heart of a revolution in the way people produce and share knowledge, make friends, reach out for support, and create professional and personal networks.

When women need help with health, sexual, or personal problems, where do they turn? In a recent Pew Poll, researchers found that women were more likely to turn to the Web for knowledge and support. (Reference: Pew Internet & American Life Project, "How Women and Men Use the Internet," online at http://www.pewinternet.org/pdfs/PIP_Women_and_Men_online.pdf).

It's that heady combination of technology, sex, and knowledge in the hands of women (and men) that fascinates well-known Atlanta-area tech/sex blogger Amber Rhea and inspired her to organize the event. She's not alone. The grassroots unconference will explore these issues with notable and notorious Web-based activists. On April 12, Sex 2.0 participants will:

  • Hear keynote speaker Audacia Ray -- blogger, video podcaster, award-winning porn director and author of Naked on the Internet - Hookups, Downloads, and Cashing in on Internet Sexploration.
  • Stimulate your "Sex Drive" with Regina Lynn, Wired magazine's sex-tech columnist and author of Sexier Sex: Lessons from the Brave New Sexual Frontier. In her session "How Love/Sex Happens Online," Lynn will explore the powerful and unexpected experiences people have with online lovers and what it all means inside the hearts of geekdom. Because sex is the first use for any new technology, Lynn will demonstrate how to get the most out of your phone, webcam or laptop and how to use your everyday gadgets to enhance intimacy, pleasure and fun.
  • Explore sexual relationships that spring from online meeting places like blogs and forums in sessions with sex futurist Melissa Gira, who runs the award-winning sex blog Sexerati, and contributes to $pread, WHORE!, Best Sex Writing 2008, and Dirty Girls.
  • Make history with T.A. Hines' session, "A Brief History of Sex." Hines is the irreverent, popular podcaster and Nerve magazine columnist who chronicles her funky brown chick take on sex and New York City in her weekly Internet radio show Dating Roadkill.
  • Tempt your inner erotic writer with sex bloggers and writers like Rachel Kramer Bussel, who keeps things tingling at her Lusty Lady blog, and Viviane, who heats up the Web with her blog Viviane's Sex Carnival.
  • Mix it up with j. brotherlove, Joseph G., Minx and Ren, who'll host rollicking sessions about online dating, cruising, hooking up, BDSM, and swinging whether for kinksters, sexual, ethnic and racial minorities, straight, curious, and in-between

Rhea says she wants the interactive sessions to be a place where people create the experience they need. "This is not your father's sex conference," she said. "An unconference belongs to the people who come -- double entendre intended."

People are often puzzled by an unconference, said Rhea, but it's almost always an experience that makes you never want to attend an ordinary conference again. "You won't be in a room, sitting on your hands, waiting for a one-way presentation. It's just like sex, really: a powerful interaction between people that makes the experience more than the people involved."

Registration for the event is $10 by February 17, $40 until March 28, and $50 after March 28, with the rest of the cost underwritten by volunteers and sponsors. There are still opportunities for sponsors who want to reach their audience -- people at the center of a new media that's changing the way we live.

Rhea thinks that the approach will attract a wide audience: "Everyone will be there to both raise and answer questions, teach and learn -- you can do both in one session. It's up to you."

Georgia's Movers and Shakers Available For Downloading At WhatIsGoinOn.com

August 9, 2007. Lyons, GA -- Wilson Smith, Attorney at Law from Lyons, Georgia, decided "someone needed to keep an eye on politicians in general." So he commenced the dirty work by interviewing noteworthy folk in Georgia politics for the Lyons radio station, WLYU.

Now, Smith's political media inclinations have grown into a treasure trove of notables in Georgia news, media and politics -- with Smith's freewheeling interviews available as podcasts for listening at your desktop, or for downloading to your mobile device, on the newly-refurbished website and blog, WhatIsGoinOn. (http://www.whatisgoinon.com/)

Whether he's talking to Lt. Governor Casey Cagle about the upcoming Legislative session or a national political operative like Terry McAuliffe, Smith's genuine southern style and wit shines through with his skilled conversational tone, something woefully lacking in most contemporary political media.

Smith's fascination with new social media tools such as blogging and podcasting is also a big part of WhatIsGoinOn, as in-between political interviews and his work as an attorney he quizzes notable Georgia bloggers such as Erick Erickson and James Williams on their work in emerging new media.

Smith hired Rusty Tanton and Amber Rhea, co-creators of the award-winning Georgia Podcast Network, to create the new look and easy navigation of WhatIsGoinOn.

Sex 2.0 "unconference" will explore sexuality, feminism and social media

ATLANTA, Ga., July 17, 2007 — Sex 2.0, a one-day conference, will offer sessions which explore the intersection of feminism, sexuality and social media. It will take place April 12, 2008 at the Spring4th Center in Atlanta. Admission is free $10.

"Social media has enabled fundamental changes in how people learn, grow and connect sexually," said Amber Rhea, one of Sex 2.0's organizers. "The sessions will explore what those changes mean in a safe, welcoming, sex-positive environment."

Sex 2.0 is an unconference, which means that sessions will be informal conversations organized by people attending the event. Session leaders with some knowledge in a subject area facilitate conversations among the participants.

"Everyone should feel free to share what they know, and raise any questions they may have," Rhea said. "Respecting the confidentiality and protecting the identities of participants who wish to maintain a degree of anonymity will be a top priority at Sex 2.0."

Rhea was also the main organizer of PodCamp Atlanta, a podcasting and new media conference which took place March 17-18, 2007. Her inspiration for Sex 2.0 came from the success of PodCamp Atlanta combined with a frustration with how women who use the internet to express their sexuality are portrayed in popular culture.

Several sessions have already been scheduled, including: "Erotic Writing 101" with author Rachel Kramer Bussel; "Sex Work and Online Feminism" with sex worker and blogger Renegade Evolution; "Choose Your Own Adventure: How has the escorting business changed with the advent of the Internet?" with former sex worker Kristi Kane; and "Sexual Subculture as Internet Phenomenon" with gay blogger Joseph G. The keynote speaker will be Audacia Ray, author of Naked on the Internet and director of the award-winning film The Bi Apple.

The event is managed by volunteers and funded by sponsors. A wide variety of sponsorship opportunities are currently available.

GA political techno history

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — Atlanta, GA, June 11, 2007

A handful of bloggers were able to broadcast live, via broadband, the N. Georgia Democrats "For the People" political rally yesterday. The archives are here:

http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/xSsuYBY2Yhva5fswXUn2OA

This was Georgia political broadcasting history in the making, using available online technology and applications. Who needs satellite and microwave to go live anymore? Heck, who needs TV stations now?! (If only we could figure out how to get rid of that nasty little audio hum. Next time, we'll have that figured out.)

Production participants included: Grayson Daughters with WaySouth Media, Jon Flack of Tondee's Tavern, Bernita Smith of Blog for Democracy, and Martin Matheny, Communications Director for the Georgia Democratic Party. Much needed assistance was provided off site by Jim Long of Verge New Media (via Yahoo! Instant Messaging from DC); Brad, the creator of uStream.tv, and that really patient audio dude in the broadcast booth at the Georgia Mountains Center in Gainesville, GA. (Thank you all.)

Once up live on uStream.tv, the producers publicized the event to various social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, etc.

Free podcasting "unconference" to introduce podcasting to newbies, help current podcasters hone their skills

ATLANTA, Ga., Feb. 12, 2007 — PodCamp Atlanta, a two-day unconference, will offer sessions to introduce podcasting to the uninitiated and to help current podcasters expand their skills. It will be held March 17-18 at Emory University. Attendance is free.

"It's a great opportunity for hobbyists, organizations and everyone else to learn how to create podcasts and how podcasting can benefit them," said Amber Rhea, one of PodCamp Atlanta's organizers.

Podcasts are multimedia files that are syndicated over the Internet. People can use software to download them automatically and watch or listen to them whenever they want rather than being confined to watch or listen at a specific time.

PodCamp Atlanta is an unconference, which means that sessions will be informal conversations organized by fellow participants. People with some knowledge in a subject area, such as podcast production or writing, facilitate conversations with the audience.

"Everyone is free to ask questions and share what they know," said Penny Haynes, another of PodCamp Atlanta's organizers. "The discussions are much more exciting than traditional conference presentations where someone stands at the front of the room and reads off a set of slides."

More than 20 sessions are already scheduled, including "Podcasting 101: Getting Started," "Legal Issues in Podcasting," "Creating Sponsorship Opportunities for Your Podcast," "Grow Your Business by Podcasting," and "Podcasting and Politics."

Close to 100 people have already registered for PodCamp Atlanta. Registration will be closed once 200 participants have signed up, so anyone wishing to attend is encouraged to register as soon as possible.

PodCamp Atlanta will be the eighth unconference in the series. The first PodCamp was held in Boston in September 2006, and others have since been held in San Francisco, Pittsburgh and Berlin, Germany among other places.

The event is managed by volunteers and funded by sponsors 1st Podcast Publishing; Blubrry; Escape Artists, Inc.; Georgia Daily Digest; Georgia for Democracy; Georgia Podcast Network; Georgia Political and Policy Digest; Hakano; iProng; ListenShare; Podcast Directories for Sale; PodcastSoup; TalkShoe; TechLINKS; TechSmith; and What a Concept!. Sponsorship opportunities are still available.

To register for free, to view a full schedule of sessions and to learn more, visit the event's Web site at www.podcampatlanta.com. Georgia Podcast Network launches with 15 programs, seeking contributors for original shows

DECATUR, Ga., May 1, 2006 — The Georgia Podcast Network, a first-of-its-kind portal for state-focused podcasts, has officially launched carrying 15 programs, including three originally produced programs.

"More and more Georgians are creating podcasts every day, but until this site came along, there was no central place to find them all," said Georgia Podcast Network co-founder Amber Rhea. "In addition to the original programs we and our friends create, this site will serve as a one-stop-shop to find all Georgia-related podcasts."

As of launch, the Georgia Podcast Network is carrying 12 affiliate programs with plans to expand its line-up continuously. The professionally- and independently-produced shows span a wide range of topics, from political talk radio to underground hip hop to church sermons.

Podcasting is a method for publishing audio and video files to the Internet that lets listeners and viewers subscribe to a feed that will deliver those files automatically, where they can then be listened to or watched on a computer, Apple iPod or other digital media player.

Mostly ITP, the network's first original program, is a variety show focusing mostly on events and personalities inside Atlanta's perimeter. It is hosted by network co-founders Amber Rhea and Rusty Tanton.

In a recent episode, Tanton interviewed the staffers from Atlanta alternative news weekly Creative Loafing to discuss the future of its online presence and implications of new media forms on traditional media outlets. Rhea recently interviewed web development gurus Eric Meyer and Jeffrey Zeldman when they were in town for the "An Event Apart" conference.

The first episode of the GA Politics Podcast was a roundtable discussion about the recently concluded Georgia Legislature session featuring:

New episodes will follow monthly and will feature these panelists and others from around business, media, politics and the Georgia blogosphere.

The North Fulton Drama Club podcast is an ongoing journal about the undertakings and passions of the eponymous community theater ensemble. In its first episode, members Thomas Strickland, Nikki Strickland, Alyssa Jackson and Matt Ramsey discussed their upcoming production of Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost, which will open May 12 in Barrington Hall in Roswell. New episodes featuring producers and cast members will follow monthly.

Georgia residents interested in creating a podcast should send an e-mail to info@gapodcastnetwork.com and include some information about their idea for a show. Podcasters without their own recording equipment can use the network's equipment for free. For more information, visit the Georgia Podcast Network web site at www.gapodcastnetwork.com.

There is no charge to host a program on or to become an affiliate of the Georgia Podcast Network.
