Show notes

Grace Buford is a metro Atlanta musician and music teacher who plays folk music in venues around the city, as well as in Second Life under her alter ego Cylindrian.

I interviewed her last Saturday, June 7, 2008 at Java Monkey in Decatur.

This interview is broken into in two parts, with a musical interlude featuring a pair of Grace's songs.

In the first half of the interview, which lasts about 14 minutes, we discuss her music career and the differences between playing in real venues vs. virtual venues.

In the second half, which lasts about 16 minutes, we continue that discussion, and also talk about legal issues in the music industry, marketing on Twitter and MySpace, and teaching music.

The songs featured in the interlude are An Open Door from Grace's album River, and This Dream from her album Virtually Live.

Also, I play excerpts of Mattie's Runaway Train from River in the background of some of the bumpers.

Sex, Wine and Chocolate: a sex-positive cabaret fundraiser

If you don't have plans for Oct. 18, be sure to mark your calendar and come to the Georgians for Choice/Generation Five Sex, Wine and Chocolate fundraiser. Hell, if you do have plans, cancel them and come to this instead, because it's likely to be a lot more fun than whatever you've got scheduled.

Sex, Wine and Chocolate

There will be burlesque performances, spoken word, a drag show, Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School, all manner of tasty desserts, a chocolate fountain, plenty of booze, awesome prizes such as a trip to St. Croix, and, of course, more.

I'm really excited about this because too often, it seems like nonprofit activist type gatherings are so somber and boring - which always struck me as a terrible way to raise money for a cause. Instead, why not have a big party that says, "This is the good stuff our organization is working for in the world!"

So come to Decatur on Oct. 18 and get yourself some sex, wine, and chocolate - or at least one of the three.

(Major props to Mel for creating the bad-ass logo. It makes me salivate.)

Misadventures in podcasting, part II

Amber already gave you the lowdown on her misadventures in podcasting, so now here's one of mine...

The most egregious mistake I've made so far was at our very first podcast party. Things were going swimmingly. There was palpable energy in the room after we recorded the first North Fulton Drama Club and GA Political Podcast episodes. The liquor was flowing, and everyone gathered around Duane to grill him in a Meet Your Podcasters segment. He was hilarious and everyone was having a great time. In my case, perhaps, a little too much of a good time.

The apartment was stocked with Sweetwater, Sam Adams, Bud Light, Flying Dog, and Terrapin, and I went through a few of each of them (except the Bud Light, blech). After the group interview with Duane was over, there was a brief lull, followed by frantic requests to record some PSAs and commercials. In my drunken stupor, I had saved Duane's last podcast but forgotten to quit the recording program and re-launch it to start a new podcast. So, I overwrote Duane's podcast with the PSAs and commercials.

We lost a really kickass podcast because I was shitfaced. Go beer! Err...

In this May 23 interview, I talked with singer/songwriter Vicki Blankenship, CEO of Indiegrrl. We sat on the patio of My Sister's Room in Decatur and slapped mosquitoes - and talked about music, life, and more.

The Indie Grrl Showcase, organized by Vicki, will be at Eddie's Attic on Friday, May 26th. It starts at 7:30 and lasts until everyone's too tired to dance fully appreciate great music* anymore.

To hear more of Vicki Blankenship's music, visit our affiliate Rubyfruit Radio. Also be sure to check out Indie Music For Life and Outmusic.

* Update, 5.26.06: Okay, I've outed myself as unhip; clearly I had never been to Eddie's Attic before tonight. I didn't realize it wasn't a dancing kind of venue. Nevertheless - Vicki et al put on a fantastic show!

Show notes

It's time for another installment of "Meet Your Podcasters," this time with Duane of duanemoody.com (and to a lesser extent, Garrett of garrettvonk.com and the GA Politics Podcast, but he had to leave midway through, so we'll just have to get him liquored up again some other time). We abandoned the one drink/one question format for this interview and just let the Bud Light flow freely. In addition to Garrett and myself, Rusty and Joe Winter were also present with questions for Duane.
